The very first Ontario 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition is to be hosted by Queen's University on April 18th, 2013. Queen's ran their first 3MT competition in 2012, as did Western University. Now 17 Ontario Universities are ready to compete against each other.
Queen's, Western and McMaster, instigated the Ontario competition after a meeting in 2012. It was decided that Queen's would host the first in 2013, McMaster the 2nd in 2014 and Western the 3rd in 2015.
The response to the first Ontario competition has been amazing and only 3 Ontario Universities will not be competing this year, although they hope to in 2014.
The three minute thesis competition provides graduate students with an opportunity to refine skills that can be transferred after graduation to diverse career paths. Distilling research into a clear form, without over-simplifying or making overly-complex, and highlighting the wider implications of this research are important skills to carry into post-graduate employment and public service.
The competition also enables students to showcase their research to a wider audience, across disciplines within the university and to the broader public.
The Three Minute Thesis 3MT® competition was initially developed by The University of Queensland in 2008 to promote effective communication of research. The success of the competition is now shown throughout the world.
