Documentation and Accommodations for Grad Students

By contacting QSAS as early as possible, students requiring academic accommodations, can develop an accommodation plan, have access to services, and have supports in place.
Graduate students seeking academic accommodations need to register annually with the Queen's Student Accessibility Service (QSAS) to review your documentation and any academic accommodations you received during your undergrad. Please inform your advisor in the QSAS if there are any changes to your program or disability that require updating your academic accommodations. Changes due to disability may require supporting documentation. As always, your documentation must come from a registered health care professional experienced in the field of the student's disability. There are different requirements for documentation depending on the nature of your disability.
Accommodations Policy for Graduate Students with Disabilities, Queen's School of Graduate Studies
Students with learning disabilities or ADHD may need more complete or up-to-date documentation that may require a new psychoeducational and neuropsychological assessment. The QSAS may refer you to the Regional Assessment and Resource Centre (RARC). RARC provides appropriate, accurate, comprehensive and effective assessment services and follow up services to the Queen's University student population and to persons with specific learning disabilities in the south-eastern region of Ontario.
One of the roles of the QSAS is to determine accommodation plans for students with disabilities. Accommodation planning is a collaborative effort between the student, faculty, and the advisor of the QSAS to find the most effective, efficient, and equitable solutions.
Your QSAS Advisor will work with you to create an appropriate individualized accommodation plan that may include:
- Special examination arrangements;
- Use of computers for exams;
- Special classroom arrangements;
- Alternate formats for course material;
- Adaptive technology lab use and equipment loan;
- Referral to other service providers such as Counselling, Learning Skills, Peer mentoring, and Note-taking services.
