Dual Degree and Changes to Dual Degree

Fall 2012 is the last term that students may apply to begin a Dual Degree with any open area of study in the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Beginning Winter 2013, students will only be able to apply to begin a Dual Degree with a Bachelor of Arts (General) in Economics (ECON-G-BA).

    Overview

    The Dual Degree Program consists of a primary degree program and a secondary degree program, allowing Queen's students to concurrently complete degree requirements for programs in two different Faculties or Schools at Queen's University.

    One of Commerce, Engineering or Nursing is the primary program, with a secondary program in the Faculty of Arts and Science. Unless additional courses for the secondary program are taken during the academic year or the Spring-Summer Sessions, such a Dual Degree Program will usually take at least five years of study.

    Note: Students who have already completed one degree program should apply to a Second Degree Program rather than to a Dual Degree Program. Students whose first degree program is not Arts and Science, must be registered in a Second Degree Program before taking the additional courses towards the Second Degree Program.

    Each Faculty/School has a Dual Degree advisor who will be able to answer program-specific questions.
    For detailed information on Dual Degrees, please see here.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible, students must meet all of the following criteria:

    • have the equivalent of Arts and Science Full-Time standing in their home Faculty or School;
    • have completed the equivalent of at least 8 one-term courses (where a one-term course is equivalent to a typical 3.0-unit course in Arts and Science) in their home Faculty or School;
    • have been in good academic standing in their home Faculty or School throughout their Undergraduate Career at Queen's.  (Note:  "Good academic standing" is defined as having no academic sanction imposed in the student's home Faculty or School.  Such sanctions in the home Faculty or School may include "Special Programs" noted on the student's record that result from previous poor performance, academic probation, or a requirement to withdraw;
    • have a minimum Cumulative GPA of 2.90;
    • apply to an Arts and Science Degree Program in a substantially different Plan from that in their primary Degree Program; and
    • satisfy departmental criteria for admission to the Plan.

    Note that Dual Degree Program combinations are not permitted if there is a significant overlap in the two programs.

    Dual Degree Combinations

    It is important that candidates interested in the Dual Degree Program apply early in their program. Students need to be admitted to and registered in the secondary degree program before taking additional courses intended for the secondary degree program.

    Degree Requirements

    In general, students must satisfy the requirements for each degree program.  A maximum of 60 credit units may be counted toward both the primary and secondary programs.

    If the secondary program is Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Computing, students must complete the course requirements for their primary program as well as the following number of additional Queen's courses:
    • 30 credit units for a Bachelor of Arts (Minor), Bachelor of Science (General) or Bachelor of Computing (General) secondary program.
    • 54 credit units for a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) secondary program.
    • 60 credit units for a Bachelor of Science (Honours) or Bachelor of Computing (Honours) secondary program.

    These additional Arts and Science courses must be registered under the Arts and Science program. Students pay Arts and Science course fees for the courses they are taking while registered in the Faculty of Arts and Science.
