Financial Resources
-
Government Student Financial Assistance: Each province/territory has its own student financial assistance program, which loans students funds to help pay for their post-secondary education and living costs.
- University Financial Aid: Each university has its own student financial assistance options. Each university is different in their criteria and deadlines, so check their websites for specifics.
-
Admission scholarships: These are non-repayable awards that are based on high academic achievement. You may receive a scholarship automatically with your offer, or by application.
-
Admission bursaries: These are non-repayable awards that are reserved for students who demonstrate financial need.
-
Work Study Program: There are lots of part-time jobs available on campus, and they’re generally reserved for students who have demonstrated financial need. It’s a great way to experience campus outside the classroom, and to save up some extra funds.
-
External Scholarships, Awards and Funding : Organizations and employers outside of the university community often offer student awards. These awards are often based on a combination of academic achievement and life experience, such as volunteering, leadership, and extracurricular activities.
-
Student Lines of Credit : Unlike government student financial assistance, Student Lines of Credit are not based on financial need, and are repayable loans through your bank or credit union.
-
Assistance for Aboriginal Students
- Band Funding: As an Aboriginal student, you may be eligible for financial assistance through your Band. Check with your community leaders to find out about your options.
-
Bursaries & Scholarships for Aboriginal Students: Some universities have financial awards and assistance reserved for Aboriginal students, and there are also numerous external awards available.
- Emergency Assistance: Sometimes the unexpected can occur, and you may find yourself in a financial emergency. Universities have support networks to deal with these crises – make sure to talk to your Student Awards contacts about your options.
