Another wonderful year for the Calgary Branch! With a wide variety of fun and interesting events and strong attendance across the board, this year was nothing short of fantastic for the Queen’s Calgary community. The following are some highlights from events over the past year….
At this year's Johnson Award Ceremony, we honored Roger Smith, Sc'71, MSc’78 and Lorna Smith, Arts’69, MA’72, Ed’73. More than 100 proud alumni, family and friends came out to support Roger and Lorna as we celebrated their dedication to Queen’s University and the Geology Council, their distinguished contributions in the oil and gas sector and in developing and implementing strategies for internationalization in the academic setting, and their involvement in numerous community services.
A special thank you Josephine Tsang PhD ’06, all the volunteers and all those from Queen’s University who helped to put this event together.
The Annual Dinner stands as a cornerstone in the tradition of the Calgary Branch, as old and new Queen's friends gather to chat, laugh, and share Queen's memories. The event has been hosted for over 20 years at the home of beloved alumnus and former Johnson Award winner, Kim Sturgess Sc'77. The popularity of this event continues to increase year over year – with this year experiencing a record turnout. The Calgary Queen’s Alumni Branch was honoured to welcome Queen’s Principal Daniel Woolf and VP Advancement Tom Harris to share in our 2011 Annual Dinner.
Rain or shine, you can always count on our dedicated Calgary Queen's grads (…and rain it did!). On June 12 2011, the Calgary Queen’s Branch cheered, chanted, and paraded at the Spruce Meadows “Show Your Community Spirit” event. In doing so, we successfully raised $500 for the branch. This money will help with future branch events and the Calgary Branch Bursary.
On this day, a group of intrigued Calgary alumni gathered to experience the magic of the Titanic Exhibition at the TELUS World of Science. This famous traveling exhibit showcased 250 legendary artifacts from the Ship's debris. A guided tour taught us Queen's alumni many historical facts behind this iconic ship, as well as many of the Titanic's tales of bravery, mystery, and tragedy.Another fun time on the ice! The Annual Curling Funspiel is a tradition where Cowtown alumni keep coming back and back for the sweeping, sliding…and the…crash…ouch…
Queen’s alumni were honoured to host business journalist and author, Bruce Sellery, for a fun and informative presentation held at Calgary’s Petroleum Club.
Bruce shared highlights from his wonderful new book - "Moolala: Why smart people do dumb things with their money (and what you can do about it)". Bruce inspired many alumni young and old to get a handle on their money to live the life that they want!
Swoosh, swoosh, cheer, cheer! On February 12th, Queen’s alumni came together with our friends from the Waterloo alumni to watch the Speed Skating World Championships. A fun time was shared between new and old friends as world class athletes competed for gold!
On Thursday November 25th 2010, the Calgary Queen’s Alumni Branch was delighted to host its annual Wine & Cheese event at Calgary’s spectacular, historic Lougheed House. With over 140 joyous alumni in attendance, the event boasted the one of the best turnouts ever for the Calgary Branch.
The annual Wine and Cheese marks a strong tradition for the Calgary Queen’s Alumni Branch, for many years running. This year was especially unique and special because of its venue. Built in 1891, the Lougheed House was the house of the Lougheed family for years and is now a National Historic site located in downtown Calgary. On top of good wine and food, alumni guests to the Wine & Cheese enjoyed a journey back in time through tours and tales of this grand estate.
