Daren Dougall, Artsci’85, MEd’97, is the 2012 recipient of the Padre Laverty Award. This award is given annually to an alumnus for service to Queen’s University or ‘town/gown’ contributions related to Queen’s and the Kingston community. Daren is the Executive Director of the Youth Diversion Program,a charitable organization that has offered service to youth in the Kingston area since 1974. Under Daren’s leadership, the organization has grown from a fledgling, one-person organization to one that helps more than 700 at-risk local youth and works with hundreds of volunteers. Daren has helped build connections between Youth Diversion and Queen’s, providing community placements and volunteer opportunities for students. He also lectures at the Faculty of Education.
The 2012 recipient of the Jim Bennett Achievement Award is Bhavana Varma,the Executive Director/President & CEO for United Way Kingston Frontenac Lennox & Addington.This award is presented annually to a Kingstonian who has made outstanding contributions to the Kingston or Queen's community. Bhavana joined the United Way in Kingston in 1999. During her tenure as President she has initiated groundbreaking fundraising campaigns and launched exciting new programs such as Success by 6 and community-driven revitalization projects.

Both awards will be presented at a gala dinner on Tuesday, May 15 at Ban Righ Hall. Registration is now open for this event.
