Homecoming 2013 - FAQs

Why will Homecoming be held over two weekends?

In the past, alumni attending Homecoming events have had difficulty finding available hotel rooms, restaurants, etc. Each year Queen’s graduates some 4500 new alumni. Two weekends will help ease that pressure on local businesses and services and allow alumni to instead focus on the camaraderie of Homecoming.

Who are the Gaels playing on my reunion weekend?

If you are returning on October 5th – Queen's plays Laurier.
If you are returning on October 19th - Queen's plays Guelph.

What types of events does the University have planned for the weekend?

There are a variety of University events being developed that are currently in the design stages.

These include:

• New programming for alumni celebrating a 25th reunion year
• Programming for the  Queen's Tricolour Guard (alumni celebrating a reunion of 50 years or more)
• Home football game and half-time parade on each weekend
• Class and faculty events
• Networking opportunities for students and alumni – this will be a good chance to find out about the latest research current students from your faculty are working on and a great opportunity to connect one-on-one with students
• A focus on community (Kingston, and Queen's) – let's plan some activities that reconnect us with our old stomping grounds and old friends in Kingston.
• Student organized programs

Will my faculty/Dean be participating in both weekends?

Are any of my professors going to be around that weekend?

We hope to be able to connect you with your former professors. If you would like to be connected with a former prof and involve them in one of your class events, please contact the Reunions Office at reunions@queensu.ca.

Will we have access to our old buildings over the weekend (will they be unlocked)?

Will there be campus tours over the weekend?

Will there be a parade around the track for alumni at half-time of the football game on both weekends?

Where can I stay for the weekend?

Queen's has booked blocks of rooms for those of you celebrating your 25th and 50th+ reunions. Contact the Reunions Office for information on how to book a room. If you don't fall under either of these categories, your Reunion Coordinator may have booked a block of rooms for your class.

You also have the option of booking rooms on your own. Kingston accommodation information can be found online.

We haven't been to Kingston for a while. What are some good restaurants for dinner/brunch that weekend?

How do I find out what my class is doing?

You should be receiving a letter from your Reunion Coordinator early in the New Year with all of the details. You may want to stay connected with what your class is planning by regularly visiting your class web page.

My class doesn't have a Reunion Coordinator. How do I get involved in organizing something for my class?

Can I come on a different weekend than I'm designated to return on?

Alumni are welcome to participate in reunions at any time of the year, including a different weekend than what their "official" celebrations are occurring on.

Official celebration timing:

• Alumni celebrating a 5th, 15th, 25th, 35th, 45th reunion (or all classes ending with the digit "8" ex: 2008) will be invited to return on October 4-6, 2013.
• Alumni celebrating a 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th and all Tricolour Guard (alumni celebrating a reunion greater than 50 years) – (or all classes ending with the digit "3" ex: 2003) will be invited to return on October 18-20, 2013.

Will any of the bars on campus be open?

Can we repaint our class crest while we're there?

Yes! Check in with the Reunions Office to figure out how you might go about this.
