Alumna named as 2012 3M National Teaching Fellow

Fiona Walton, MEd’80, has been named as a 2012 3M National Teaching Fellow, a designation that recognises exceptional contributions to teaching and learning at Canadian universities.

Fiona is an associate professor of education at the University of Prince Edward Island whose research and teaching focuses on indigenous education, knowledge exchange, resilience in the lives of beginning teachers, literacy in indigenous contexts, and community-based participatory action research.

Fiona has been involved in Inuit education for over 30 years and was instrumental in establishing a ground-breaking program that assisted 21 Inuit women students in Iqaluit to graduate with Master of Education degrees in 2009. As a co-creator of innovative courses such as Leadership in Postcolonial Education, Introduction to Aboriginal Education, and Integrating Aboriginal Themes into the Curriculum, she helps teachers to create a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students. Fiona describes her teaching philosophy as “rocking the boat and stirring the pot in ways that maintain safety, but also provoke critique and invite pre-service teachers and undergraduate students to take an active role in shaping and improving the world.”

A visionary educator, Fiona has created a lasting legacy in Aboriginal education.
