Research Interests

Painting Conservation, Artists' Materials and Painting Techniques, Materials used by Early Painters in Canada, Canadian War Artists and the History and Use of Artists' Tools and Paintboxes.

Biography

Barbara Klempan has extensive experience in working as a painting conservator at the Canadian Conservation Institute in Ottawa (1979-83) and as head of painting conservation at the Library and Archives Canada (1983-1994). She taught painting conservation at Queen's University (1990-91) and at the University of Canberra, Australia (1994-98). She joined the faculty of the Art Conservation Program at Queen's in 2002. Her current research work includes the study of artists' materials and technique and importation and distribution of artists' materials into North America. She recently undertook a research fellowship at Winterthur, USA to further investigate her current area of research.
