Research Interests

Applications of infrared spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence analysis to studies of the composition and properties of artists materials.


Gus Shurvell is a retired Queen's University chemistry professor.  As an Adjunct Professor in the Master of Art Conservation Program, he assists students and faculty in the Art Conservation program with instrumental analysis and advice on the chemistry of artists' materials.  He is a licensed operator of an X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzer, which is able to detect the elements present in a sample.  He also operates an infrared spectrometer which is used to detect molecules present in a sample.  Gus assists with ARTC 808 and ARTC 895 courses by giving lectures on spectroscopy and by helping students with their research projects.
