Associate Dean, Dr. Catherine (Cathie) Krull

Dr. Catherine (Cathie) Krull has been appointed as Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts and Science for the period July 1, 2012-June 30, 2017.

Catherine Krull is a Professor in the Department of Sociology, a member of the Cultural Studies Graduate Program, and is cross-appointed to the Department of Gender Studies.

Her research interests include reproductive politics, transnationalism/diasporas, family diversity, postcolonialism and development. Her most recent publications include several journal articles, book chapters and three co-edited books: A Life in Balance? Reopening the Family-Work Debate (with J. Sempruch; UBC University Press, in press); Fifty Years of Revolution: Cuba, 1959-2009 (with S. Castro; Cuban Studies 41, University of Pittsburgh Press, 2010) and New World Coming: The 1960s and the Shaping of Global Consciousness (with K. Dubinsky, S. Lord, S. Mills and S. Rutherford; Toronto: BTL Press, 2009). 

She is completing a book on Cuba in a Global Context: International Relations, Internationalism, and Transnationalism (contract with University Press of Florida) and a co-edited volume (with Jean Stubbs, University of London) on Rereading Women and the Cuban Revolution (Cuban Studies 42, University of Pittsburgh Press).

In May 2009, she organized and hosted an international conference that focused on fifty years of the Cuban Revolution and which included approximately 226 presenters and 430 attendees from more than 15 countries. 

Her most recent project (with Jean Stubbs, University of London) focuses on Cuban émigrés living in Toronto (Canada), Madrid (Spain), London (United Kingdom), Berlin (Germany) and Paris (France).  This project examines the recent migratory patterns and modes of incorporation that have shaped a new Cuban diaspora, one that differs significantly from the traditional exile group in the United States. 

Catherine has held research fellowships at Harvard University (2007); Boston University (2007); and the London School of Economics (2003). She is the current Editor of Cuban Studies and in 2011/12, she will be a Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of the Americas, School of Advanced Study, University of London.
