Drama, Craig Walker

Dr. Craig Walker has been appointed Head of the Department of Drama for the period July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2018.

Dr. Walker has worked in the Department of Drama at Queen’s since 1992, having completed an M.A. in English and a Ph.D. in Drama at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Walker has worked as a professional actor and director at many theatres including the Stratford Festival, the Shaw Festival, the National Arts Centre, the Royal Alexandra, the Sudbury Theatre Centre, the St Lawrence Shakespeare Festival and Theatre Kingston ¾ the last a company of which he was Artistic Director from 1997 to 2007.  

His writing for the stage includes an adaptation of James Joyce’s novel Finnegans Wake, new versions of Ibsen’s The Master Builder and Brecht’s Drums in the Night, and a musical, Chantecler, for which he wrote book, lyrics and music.

On the academic side, he is the author of The Buried Astrolabe: Canadian Dramatic Imagination and Western Tradition (2001), co-editor, with Jennifer Wise, of the two-volume and concise editions of The Broadview Anthology of Drama (2003 & 2005) and editor of the Broadview Press Folio and Quarto edition of Shakespeare’s King Lear (2011).  He has also contributed chapters to books such as The Legacy of Northrop Frye, Signatures of the Past: Cultural Memory in Contemporary North-American Drama and several volumes of the Critical Perspectives on Canadian Theatre in English series.
