Our music degree plans provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for students who wish to explore music as a medium for intellectual and personal growth and expression. We encourage our students to develop high-level performance skills while at the same time building crucial music and academic literacy, expanding their expertise both at the School of Music and in the Kingston community.

Specialization in Music
An intensive course of study with approximately two-thirds of your courses within the discipline.
BMus / MDM: (Bachelor of Music from Queen's University + Music and Digital Media Diploma from St. Lawrence College)
Specialization in Computing and the Creative Arts (COCA)
This specialization consists of the majority of the courses in Computing and a SubPlan such as Art, Drama, Music or Film and Media with room for elective courses.
Major in Music
A major is an intensive course of study in one discipline, with approximately half of your courses within the discipline with room for an optional minor in any other Arts and Science discipline.
Medial in Music
A dual course of study in Music and any other Arts discipline.
Minor in Music
A minor is a less intensive course of study in the discipline that must be combined with a major in another discipline.
General in Music
A less intense course of study leading to a 3-year degree.
The School of Music offers a number of first year courses. Your choice of course depends on your background, interests, and what subject you may wish to study in upper years. Some courses are only available to students in the Bachelor of Music Program - differentiated below.
MUSC 103/3.0 (Musicology) and MUSC 191/6.0 (Music Theory)
MUSC 127/3.0 and MUSC 128/3.0 (Musicianship)
MUSC 120/6.0 (Applied Study: Note that students who meet higher standards of performing ability may audition in September for acceptance into the “double credit” Applied Study courses MUSC 120/6.0 and MUSC 125/6.0 in lieu of MUSC 120/6.0. If you audition successfully, you may change your registration at that time. In addition to their private lessons, students in these advanced courses perform a public recital at the end of first year)
One of: MUSC 180/3.0; MUSC 181/3.0; MUSC 183/3.0; MUSC 185/3.0; MUSC 187/3.0; MUSC 188/3.0 (Music Education courses: choose the course related to an instrument which is not your primary performance instrument)

Students in Music Major, or Minor/General Plans follow the standard Arts and Science admission regulations. Admission to the Bachelor of Music Program is by direct-entry. Once admitted to this Program, students will be automatically enrolled in the Music Specialization Plan. Admission will generally require an audition. Students from other universities, from any other Faculty at Queen’s, or currently registered in any other Program in Arts and Science must also apply through the Admission Services to the B.Mus. Program. This includes any students who were previously required to withdraw from the B.Mus. Program and who wish to gain re-entry. Again, an audition will be required. See Admissions Regulation 13 for complete details.
A theory rudiments diagnostic test is administered during the audition phase of the application to the B.Mus. Program. B.Mus. students achieving a grade of A- or better on this test enrol in MUSC 191/6.0 without conditions. B.Mus. students achieving a grade of B+ or lower will be expected to do remedial work as part of MUSC 191/6.0. Students are strongly encouraged to strengthen their skills in rudiments before commencing the program.
If you are a B.Mus. student, the School of Music will register you in your first-year core Music courses.
The comprehensive music program combines a balance of theoretical, historical, cultural and technological music studies with practical applications, creative and performing opportunities. In this flexible program students are not compelled to declare a "major," and all courses are open to all B.Mus. student provided they have the prerequisites. The B.Mus. program prepares students for a wide variety of professional careers in music, other fields and for post-graduate study in a chosen area of specialization.

MUSC 124/6.0 Applied Music
A course of private instrumental or vocal instruction for Arts and Science students. Note that students must be able to perform at either Royal Conservatory Grade IX Piano, or Grade VIII for all other instruments and vocalists. Contact the School of Music to arrange an audition (note: auditions for MUSC 124 typically occur before the beginning of classes in September).

Music Ensembles range from small chamber ensembles to larger orchestral ensembles or choirs. They focus on rehearsal and public performance of music throughout the academic year. Registration is by audition. All B.Mus students must enrol in one vocal ensemble during their first year. They may register in up to two ensembles in any given academic year and up to six over the course of their degree. Arts and Science students may also audition to participate in ensembles.
MUSC 171/3.0 The Social History of Popular Music
A survey of important trends in 20th-century Western popular music. Topics include genres, individual artists and groups, record labels and stylistic trends, and sociological issues.
MUSC 289/3.0 Introduction to Music Education
An introduction to the historical, psychological, sociological, and philosophical foundations of music education in North America. Three school-based observations may be included
Transfer to the B. Mus.: Students who wish to transfer to the Bachelor of Music Program -- Music Specialization Plan from another Plan in Arts and Science (including the Music Major, Medial or Minor) must apply through the Faculty of Arts and Science office; first-years through SOLUS and upper-years through the plan change process. Applicants are required to perform an audition. There are limited spaces available, and it is prudent to seek advice from the School of Music before initiating this process.

Interested students should telephone the School of Music at 613-533-2066 and speak to the auditions coordinator or the Chair of Undergraduate Studies.
Pending a decison on admission to the BMUS plan, ASC1 students should still participate in the Plan Selection Process and choose an alternate plan in early May in case they are not accepted into the Bachelor of Music Program.
Founded in September 2007, Queen's Conservatory of Music (QCM) is a developing organization housed in Queen's School of Music that offers private and group music instruction for non-University credit. Courses, ensembles, workshops and performance opportunities will bring together people from all across the Queen's and greater Kingston communities who share the passion of music. QCM strives to provide the highest level of music education in a non-credit setting, and to build a community destination for musical enrichment and learning for musicians of all ages.

The School of Music DSC is a group of enthusiastic volunteers and leaders dedicated to representing the students of the School of Music. Several of the DSC members hold positions on various School of Music committees and participate in Department meetings. The DSC is actively involved in recruitment and participates in the Ontario Universities' Fair and Queen's March Break Open House. This group is also involved in the planning and running of social events, including semi-formals, Paint the Crest, and the Messiah Sing-along. The DSC often organizes fundraising events in which the proceeds go to support new projects in the School of Music. The DSC is also responsible for administering course evaluations, overseeing the mandatory concert attendance requirement, and helping to promote School of Music concerts.
