Introduction to Statistics

STAT 263/3.0

A basic course in statistical methods with the necessary probability included. Topics include probability models, random variables, distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, elementary nonparametric methods.

Learning Outcomes

 

After completing this course, students should have the knowledge and skills to do the following:  

  1. Determine and interpret statistics related to the location, variability, and shape of qualitative and quantitative data sets.
  2. Apply basic concepts of probability to determine the role that probability distributions play in statistical inference.
  3. Find and interpret confidence intervals for means, variances, and proportions.  
  4. State the assumptions required for and perform basic parametric hypothesis tests about means, variances, and proportions, and find and interpret resulting p-values. 
  5. Perform basic nonparametric hypothesis tests about means.
  6. Perform linear regression and make inferences based on the results.
  7. Apply knowledge of statistics and research design to critically evaluate research findings as well as to make more informed decisions in everyday life.

Description

STAT 263/3.0 is a Moodle-based (i.e.,online) course which presents the basic concepts and methodology of statistics. A pre-test for the course is available (below). This test does not count toward the course but will be useful to students who wish to confirm that they have the algebra and computational skills necessary for the successful completion of the course.

Weekly Quizzes

There will be 11 more-or-less weekly quizzes available via Moodle – there is no quiz the first week and the quiz for the week of the term test is deferred into the next week. The questions on the quizzes will be similar to questions worked through in the lectures and presented in the non-assignments.

Midterm and Final Exams

The term test, which covers material to the end of chapter 9, will take place during the sixth week of term. Students will take their term test online, like the quizzes.

The final exam will be a three-hour formally supervised exam and will cover all the course material, with an emphasis on material from the second half of the course. This is so because much of the material covered in the first half of the course is fundamental to the material covered in the second half. Details about the final exam will be posted on the STAT 263 Moodle page as they become available.

Students must write their exam on the day and time scheduled by the University. The start time may vary slightly depending on the off-campus exam centre. Do not schedule vacations, appointments, etc., during the exam period.

About SOLUS

About Credit Units

Queen’s courses are weighted in credit units. A typical one-term course is worth 3.0 units, and a typical two-term course is worth 6.0 units. You combine these units to create your degree. A general (three-year) BA or BSc requires a total of 90 credit units.

Computer Requirements

To take an online course, you’ll need a high speed internet connection as well as a microphone and speakers to be able to watch videos, hear sounds, and participate in interactive online activities. A webcam is recommended but not necessary.

  • Windows Vista SP2/Mac OSX 10.9 or higher
  • Up to date versions of Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari. Please note that Google Chrome is not recommended for use in our courses.
