Proteomics & Metabolomics

Learning Outcomes

After completing BMED 482, students will be able to:

1. Identify what proteomics and metabolomics are to be able to describe how the methods can be used in both research and medical diagnosis. (Assessment 1, 2, 3)

2. Identify the limitations of techniques that are used to conduct proteomic and metabolomic measurements to be able to critically determine whether or not they can be applied to a specific problem. (Assessment 1 – 4)

3. Use data from simulated experiments to identify proteins or metabolites present in a sample using web-based and/or other available tools to explain its relevance to cellular physiology or draw conclusions about the significance of the results. (Assessment 2 – 4)

Description

‘Omics’ technologies allow the components of a living organism to be appreciated in their entirety by providing insight into gene expression, protein synthesis and function and metabolic networking. This course builds upon concepts presented in third year courses 0 by covering the basic principles of proteomics and metabolomics and their application in the new systems biology ‘omics’ approach to scientific discovery. This course will emphasize both the methodologies used in proteomics and metabolomics, as well as their applications in both research and medical diagnostic settings.

About Credit Units

Queen’s courses are weighted in credit units. A typical one-term course is worth 3.0 units, and a typical two-term course is worth 6.0 units. You combine these units to create your degree. A general (three-year) BA or BSc requires a total of 90 credit units.

Computer Requirements

To take an online course, you’ll need a high speed internet connection as well as a microphone and speakers to be able to watch videos, hear sounds, and participate in interactive online activities. A webcam is recommended but not necessary.

  • Windows Vista SP2/Mac OSX 10.9 or higher
  • Up to date versions of Firefox, Internet Explorer or Safari. Please note that Google Chrome is not recommended for use in our courses.
