IDIS 220/3.0 Hacking the Humanities: An Introduction to the Digital Humanities

Developments in digital technology have forced scholars to reconceptualize their objects and methods of study, subverting previous concepts of texts as static and finite. Over a six-week period, the course will work towards crafting a definition of the term ‘digital humanities’ through examining the way in which we create, use, and think about digital resources in humanities disciplines such as literature, history, art, and music.

Students will learn the basic skills needed to create digital objects, use digital artifacts and tools specific to their own research interests, and engage in theoretical discussions about how such artifacts - texts, archives, on-line repositories, tools - can change our study of humanities subjects. IDIS220 will also provide students with the opportunity to work with leading scholars in the field of the digital humanities in workshop sessions throughout the term.
