The Bader International Study Centre

BISC Courses: Upper-Year Program, Summer 2012

Term Dates: 16 June - 13 July

All courses offered in the Upper-Year Program at the Bader International Study Centre are accredited by Queen's University. Each course is comprised of at least 36 learning hours, including course-specific field study excursions. With class sizes limited in enrolment, students receive individual attention. These features contribute to the demanding and enriching academic experience at the BISC. Courses are divided according to themes: Music, Art and Drama; Humanities; Social Sciences; Science; British Cultural Studies; Business and Economics; and Directed Tutorials

Queen's University students should consult their Faculty or Faculty Academic Calendar to ensure that they meet prerequisites. Admission Services will seek permission on behalf of applicants who do not meet stated prerequisites to enrol in preferred courses. Permission is not guaranteed, and applicants may be asked to select another course.

Students in the CUSAP Program or from other universities should consult the relevant faculty in their home universities to ensure that they meet all requirements for their academic program.

Art and Architecture in Britain from c. 1700 to the Present


A chronological survey of painting, sculpture and architecture in western culture from c. 1700 to the present day. The art works will be studied in British galleries and museums, including the National Gallery and the Tate Gallery, and at architectural monuments in Britain such as St. Paul's Cathedral.

Topics in Modern and Contemporary Art History: Trends in Contemporary Art


An examination of one aspect of modern and/or contemporary art history. Possible areas of investigation include the study of an issue important to the art of the modern and/or contemporary period, as well as the study of the methods and historiographic positionings of art historians working today.

Social History of Popular Music


A survey of important trends in 20th century Western popular music. Topics include genres, individual artists and groups, record labels and stylistic trends, and sociological issues.

A study of poetry, prose, and drama from the late nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century.

Cultural Representation: Special Topics (War Films)


Advanced seminar on relations between societies and their expression in culture, with particular reference to film, television, and comparable media. Subjects have included interdisciplinary approaches and cultural studies; cinema in the Third World.

Global Issues of the 21st Century: Topics in Indigenous Studies (The Bedouin and the Middle East State)


An examination of individual and group relations within and between culturally diverse societies. Topics include: relations among indigenous, immigrant and ethnocultural communities; acculturation and identity strategies; the role of prejudice, discrimination, dominance, emotions and values; intercultural communications and training; and modes of mutual accommodation (pluralism, internationalism and globalism).

Theoretical approaches and issues within the field, while paying particular attention to hegemony and leadership, the economic dimension of post war and post cold war security, trade, money, debt, underdevelopment, regionalism, and international organization.

Global Issues of the 21st Century: Human Rights


A variety of intellectual approaches will be integrated in an interdisciplinary exploration of some of the major challenges facing the world community. Examination of such issues as the environment, poverty, disease, human rights, cultural identity or armed conflict will be used to stimulate discovery of what constitutes ‘global engagement’. Topics will vary and the course may not be offered in every term.

Science Offerings

ENSC 390/3.0

Sustainability


This course will focus on the principles of sustainability, using the mid-15th century Herstmonceux Castle for practical applications. Students will form teams to study not only the historic building itself, but the entire 600 acres of vegetable and formal gardens, forest, and fields to determine how to make current Castle systems more sustainable. Investigations will conclude with specific sustainability recommendations presented to Herstmonceux administration and staff for comments and potential application. Participation will include classroom lectures and preparation, behind the scenes study of the Castle systems, and excursions to U.K. examples of sustainability.

ENSC 502/3.0

Research Project in Sustainability


This is an interdisciplinary research project related to environmental sustainability, with supervision and training in appropriate research methods by faculty members of the School of Environmental Studies. The course includes supervised research including a research proposal, a seminar, a poster presentation and a final thesis and oral defence.
