Student Life Coordinator Fall-Summer 2014/2015
A Student Life Coordinator (SLC) is a key part of the professional service offered by Student Services. The SLCs play a major role in defining student life here at the Bader International Study Centre and are an essential element of the student experience.
The role of SLC is a challenging position. SLCs live as part of the hall community and help develop the Castle community. At times this will require the SLC to take responsibility for dealing with a wide variety of issues as they arise. This may include providing pastoral and welfare advice and support to students, taking formal disciplinary action or liaising with a wide range of other agencies – both within the BISC and externally. The role additionally carries other responsibilities, such as health and safety in the hall and facilitating events including the End of Term Celebration, Pub Quiz, Intramural Sports and welfare programming. As an SLC you will be expected to be pro-active, to take personal responsibility and to work as a part of team in which effective communication and reliability is key. The nature of the work requires SLCs to work a shift pattern as determined by the Student Services Manager and the needs of the students. Duties will inevitably vary somewhat, but you must expect to be ‘on call’ for three shifts per week (including weekends). In the case of extreme emergencies, you will have an on-call manager to whom you can turn for advice and assistance, but in all other matters you must be prepared to accept responsibility yourself.
As an SLC you will be part of a relatively small team. You will be the first point of contact for the students and you will be called upon to exercise common sense and sound judgment, sometimes in crisis situations.
We are looking for self-reliant individuals who can take initiative and work in a fast paced and demanding environment. The ideal candidate will be a recent university graduate with experience of living in a university residence setting who is seeking a unique international work experience in the UK. Preference may be given to candidates who have past participation in study abroad programs and/or previous leadership experience in residence.
Staffing field studies and organizing trips will give the SLC an opportunity to travel within the UK and Europe, therefore a valid passport is necessary.
