Dual or Second Degree Guildelines ~ Bachelor of Commerce
Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) (primary degree) students may be admitted to complete a second undergraduate degree (secondary degree) with the Faculty of Arts and Science (ASC). There are two options to do this.
A Dual Degree is completed concurrently while the student is registered in the BCom degree.
The Second Degree is completed consecutively after completion of the BCom degree.
Dual Degree Program (concurrent):
Students can apply if they have successfully completed at least one full year of study in their BCom and are in good academic standing, that is, their overall undergraduate academic record has a 2.90 GPA or higher.
An application to a Dual Degree Program must be submitted to the Admission Office with the appropriate fee. The deadline for application to a Dual Degree Program for fall term entry is June 1, 2012 and winter term entry is December 1, 2012.
Departmental approval for the Plan requested in the secondary program and Arts and Science approval of the combined programs are required. Enrolment is limited in some degree Programs and Plans. The minimum GPA required for admission to some Degree Programs and Plans may vary from year to year, depending on the size and strength of the applicant pool.
Beginning in September 2012, the only Dual Degree Program available is B.A. General Economics. This Program will be available to all qualified students who wish to apply after June 1, 2012.

The total number of units to complete a BCom is 123.0. The total number of units required to obtain a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor of Science (General) [B.Sc. (Gen.)] is 90.0, a B.A.(Hons.) is 114.0, and a B.Sc.(Hons.) is 120.0.
A maximum of 60.0 units from the primary degree (ie. BCom) is shared with the secondary degree. Therefore:
for a secondary B.A. or B.Sc.(Gen.) degree, a minimum of 30.0 additional units are required on top of the BCom units for a total of 153.0 units for both programs (123.0 + 30.0 units)
for a B.A.(Hons.), a minimum of 54.0 additional units are required on top of the BCom units for a total of 177 units for both programs (123.0 + 54.0 units)
for a B.Sc.(Hons.) a minimum of 60.0 additional units are required on top of the BCom units for a total of 183 units for both programs (123.0 + 60.0 units)
Course units must be registered through SOLUS under the appropriate degree
all COMM units must be registered under the BCom degree
all shared units must be registered under the BCom degree
A maximum of 60.0 units from the primary degree are shared with the secondary degree.
students can use a maximum of 24.0 COMM units towards an ASC degree
therefore, at least 36.0 ASC units must be registered under BCom, including ECON 110
additional units necessary to complete the ASC degree must be registered under the secondary degree program.
these units must be from Queen’s courses; they may not be courses transferred from an IB/AP program, taken on exchange, or transferred from another university
Courses must be registered under appropriate program and proper fees paid. Fees are based on the degree program to which the course is registered, not the course type.
Change of Course Registration:
Students may NOT transfer completed courses from one degree to another.
Dual Degree students must contact a Commerce Academic Advisor to move any IP (in progress) courses from one degree to another if the course is not registered under the correct degree.
Change of Degree Combination:
Students are admitted to specific Dual or Second Degree Program combination. To change a secondary program (i.e. switch from B.A.[Hons.] to B.A.) or plan (i.e. switch from ENGL to HIST), a student must submit an application to Admission Services.
Withdrawal from Program:
Students admitted to a Dual or Second Degree Program who no longer wish to complete the program must inform Admission Services in writing of their intent to withdraw.
For more details on the Dual or Second Degree Program, students must attend one of the Commerce Program Information Sessions. Sessions are offer in November and March each year.
