Electronic Course Registration and Course Changes in the Add/Drop Process using QCARD
First-year students are assigned to small sections and their first-year courses by the Faculty of Law. Each year during predetermined time-frames in late March or early April, currently registered first- and second-year law students will be able to select courses through QCARD for the fall and winter terms in the following academic year. This course selection and electronic  registration process replaces the manual ballot system used prior to 2007-08. See http://qcard.queensu.ca/.

Full information about upper-year courses and the electronic course selection policies and procedures can be obtained at http://law.queensu.ca/students/jdProgram/2010-2011UpperYearProgram.html.

Student Responsibilities and Satisfying Degree Requirements

  1. Each student is responsible for ensuring that his or her program fulfills the academic and credit requirements for the J.D. See degree requirements at http://www.queensu.ca/calendars/law/pg37.html
  2. It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that she or he is eligible to enroll in a course and has met any course pre- or co-requisites. Failure to ensure that course pre-requisites or co-requisites are satisfied may result in the student being removed from the course or registration in the course may be refused.
  3. Full-time upper-year students are required to complete a minimum of 14 credits and a maximum of 17 credits per term. Part-time students may take no more than 12 credits in any term and no less than seven credits in any term unless fewer than seven credits are required in order to complete the requirements of the J.D. degree.
  4. Each upper-year student is required to complete successfully each of the following requirements: the Credit Requirement, the Overall Residency Requirement, the Mandatory Course Requirement, the Substantial Term Paper Requirement, the Practice Skills Requirement and the Advocacy Requirement. See upper-year degree requirements at http://www.queensu.ca/calendars/law/pg39.html.
  5. The administration of the Faculty of Law reserves the right to remove a law student from a course on the following grounds:
a  it becomes apparent that the maximum enrollment limit for the course has been exceeded without proper authorization
    b
pre-requisites or co-requisites are not met and the student has not obtained permission to have such requirements waived
    c
a timetable conflict occurs in the course schedule
    d
there is substantial overlap in course content with courses previously completed successfully
    e
      a course is cancelled
f  an administrative or system error occurs
    g
a student fails to comply with other administrative, system or academic rules, regulations or requirements of the Faculty of Law or of the central  University.

Electronic Course Registration and Course Changes through QCARD

  1. Each year during predetermined time-frames in late March or early April, currently registered first- and second-year law students will be able to select courses through QCARD for the fall and winter terms in the following academic year. This course selection and registration process replaces the manual ballot system used previously.
  2. Combined program students (MIR/JD, MPA/JD, M.A.(Economics)/JD) will have their core courses loaded into the system by the administration of the Faculty of Law, but may select their upper-year elective courses and preregister using the electronic process through QCARD. Such students will be classified as third-year students for the purposes of course preregistration and registration.
  3. Combined J.D./M.B.A.students will be required to choose their core management-related law courses with the Manager of the Academic Program, Nancy Somers at somersn@queensu.ca in the second and fourth years of the combined degree program. Academic advice should be sought from the Assistant Dean of Students prior to the period in which QCARD screens for registration open and courses are selected with Nancy Somers. Registration in the balance of the upper-year registrations in those years will be done through QCARD. Such students will be classified as third-year students for the purpose of course registration.
  4. Second-year part-time law students still completing the first-year curriculum must contact the Manager of the Academic Program, Nancy Somers at somersn@queensu.ca to choose a section of each first-year course prior to the opening of QCARD registration for the 2010-11 academic year. Thereafter such part-time law students may choose the balance of their upper-year electives through electronic course selection and preregistration.
  5. All new incoming law students for the 2010-11 academic year (incoming Law '13, upper-year transfer, exchange and letter of permission students, students admitted in the National Committee on Accreditation Category and new students admitted to the Common Law/Civil Law joint degree program) will be excluded from the electronic course selection and registration process.
  6. New incoming first year law students, full-time and part-time, will be assigned their first-year small section and first-year courses by the Faculty and registrations will be entered on their behalf.
  7. New incoming upper year admitted students will choose their courses with the Academic Program Manager, Nancy Somers, somersn@queensu.ca who will enter their registrations in the system. Academic advice may be sought from the Assistant Dean of Students in advance. Once the registrations are entered, new incoming upper-year students will be able to participate in the subsequent add/drop processes for fall term courses from  1-14 September 2010 and for winter term courses from 1 September 2010 to 10 January 2011.
  8. After the end of April, pre-registration screens will close and will not be accessible to law students. Any necessary changes to course registrations cannot be made again until the designated electronic add/drop period begins in September 2011.
  9. Law students selected to study elsewhere on letter of permission or on exchange in the 2011-12 academic year must participate in electronic course selection and registration through QCARD for the 2011-12 academic year. Once they are confirmed as registered elsewhere for a term(s) in the 2011-12 academic year, such students may drop their Queen's course registrations through QCARD during the relevant add/drop period for the term of study that they are abroad.

Permission to do so must be sought from the Assistant Dean of Students, Jane Emrich at jane.emrich@queensu.ca, ext. 74283.

Principles and Rules Governing Electronic Course Preregistrations and Changes through Add/Drop
  22. Access of upper-year students to courses will be governed by the principle that students slated to graduate in 2011 will be granted priority of access to courses required to satisfy degree requirements, but due regard will be given to fair access by all upper-year law students to courses needed to meet academic objectives, career goals or personal requirements such as accommodation of documented illness or disability.-
  23. Electronic selection of courses through QCARD will be subject to the following rules: A student may add or drop any course provided that:
a  The maximum enrollment limit for the course is not exceeded; and
b  There is sufficient seating in the classroom; and
c  There are sufficient materials available; and
d  All course pre-requisites and co-requisites are met; and
e  All preregistration rules and requirements are met; and
f  Any relevant Queen's University and/or Faculty of Law regulations with respect to course selections are met; and
g  All deadlines set out below are met.
  24. The deadlines for adding or dropping of courses in which a student has been pre-registered are as follows:
a  For fall term courses, the one-week period for adding and dropping courses on QCARD for the fall 2010 terms runs from 1-14 September 2010.
b  Winter term courses may be added or dropped on QCARD from 1 September 2010 to 10 January 2011 inclusive. The final deadline is 10 January 2011 for winter term courses.
  25. Students making requests for late adds or drops of courses after the established deadlines will be referred to the Academic Standing and Policies Committee. The application form can be accessed at http://law.queensu.ca/students/jdProgram/studentForms.html.
  26. The Academic Standing and Policies Committee may permit a late add or drop of any course after the appropriate deadline date, under exceptional circumstances. Requests for a late add or late drop of a course must be brought to the Assistant Dean of Students, Jane Emrich, (jane.emrich@queensu.ca) who will process these requests on behalf of the Academic Standing and Policies Committee.
  27. Once the student has obtained permission for a late course add or drop from the Academic Standing and Policies Committee, in order for a course change to be recorded on the student's academic transcript, the student must complete and sign an Academic Change Form and submit the form to either Nancy Somers, in Room 512 or to the Student Services Office for the change to be recorded in the system.
