Faculty Board
The Faculty Board of the Faculty of Law consists of the Dean, faculty members (not including retired faculty members, professors emeriti, or special lecturers who have Adjunct I status under the Collective Agreement), the Assistant Dean of Administration and Finance, the Assistant Dean of Students, the Senior Review Counsel and Review Counsel of Queen's Legal Aid, the Director of the Correctional Law Project, the Director of Career Services, the Head of the Law Library, the Reference and Technical Services Librarian, three elected staff members and ten student members. The Board has the authority to administer the affairs of the Faculty under such regulations as the Board of Trustees may prescribe. The Principal is an ex-officio member of the Faculty Board.

The ten student members and three elected staff members are elected by students and staff, respectively, in the law school. They have full membership status and voting rights except at marks meetings and on matters concerning individual students wherein the student involved does not give his or her express consent to their participation.

The student members of the Faculty Board shall be
1 the President of the Law Students' Society,
2 one member of the Executive of the Law Students' Society to be elected by and from the Executive,
3 the student senator,
4 two members of the third year class to be elected in the year elections in their second year,
5 two members of the second year class to be elected in the year elections in February of their first year,
6 two members of the first year class to be elected by the first year class in the year elections in the fall of their first year, and
7 one graduate student to be elected each fall from and by the incoming class of graduate students.

The students elected to the Faculty Board shall become members of the Faculty Board from the time of their election.

A student member who is unable to attend a meeting of the Faculty Board may appoint as alternate another member of the Law Students' Society executive or a member of the Law Students' Society Year executive, by notifying the Chair in writing at least 24 hours before the meeting in question.

In the event that the graduate student member is unable to attend a meeting of the Faculty Board, the person elected as the graduate student member of the Graduate Studies Committee will appear as the alternate member.  Alternatively, the graduate student may appoint an alternative graduate student by notifying the Chair in writing at least 24 hours before the meeting in question.

The responsibilities of the student members of the Faculty Board shall be as follows: Student representatives on the Faculty Board will be responsible to the Law Students' Society Executive or to the student body as a whole, depending on their method of obtaining a seat on the Board. Representatives should be encouraged to keep current with student problems and concerns and be diligent in ensuring that student opinion (not just the student's own opinion) is brought before the Board. To this end, student representatives will be required to report to the Law Students' Society Executive periodically as required by the Law Students' Society Executive. In addition, each representative should be required to submit a written report containing comments, opinions and recommendations before 1 September of the year in which the student relinquishes his/her position (or each year if the position is held for more than one year). There will be no restrictions or directions as to how student representatives should vote on any issue. All representatives will be individually responsible to the student body for their performance on the Faculty Board. A student member of the Faculty Board may be impeached and removed from that position by the same procedure that may be used to remove a member of the Law Students' Society Executive.

Academic Standing and Policies Committee

A sub-committee of Faculty Board deals quickly with students' problems and requests as they affect academic work and standing. The Committee is comprised of two faculty members (one of whom shall be Chair), the Assistant Dean of Students, the Manager of Education and Equity Services (who acts as non-voting Administrator to the Committee), and two students. A student presenting a request to the Committee may ask that student members of the Committee be excluded from discussion of his or her request.

The Academic Standing and Policies Committee makes decisions upon request by students on the following matters:  special examination privileges; language-based examination accommodations; extensions for submission of papers; late adding and dropping of courses; course overloads; approval of courses from outside the Queen's Faculty of Law for J.D. degree credit; changes in registration status (part-time, full-time); and withdrawal from the J.D. degree program.

A student requesting an extension for term work submission, or special consideration in relation to an examination or task that counts 50% or more of the final grade in a course on the basis of documentable adverse medical or personal circumstances, should make submissions to this Committee through the Administrator of the Committee, Helen Connop at helen.connop@queensu.ca or telephone 613.533.6000 ext. 78147. Students must complete and submit the Application to Academic Standing and Policies Committee form which is available in room 200 and on-line at http://law.queensu.ca/students/jdProgram/studentForms.html. Students who feel they would benefit from supportive counseling, tutorial or language assistance are encouraged to contact Helen Connop directly. Formal decisions of the Academic Standing and Policies Committee are issued by the Administrator to the Committee, Helen Connop, and will be sent by email to the student’s @queensu.ca official email address or by courier as seems appropriate.  Any questions or concerns regarding the Committee's decision should be directed to Helen Connop.

The Committee also deals with academic standing generally at term and year end. It makes decisions on supplemental examinations and reports all decisions to the Faculty Board.

When special consideration or any extension is being sought by a student, the Committee seeks comments as appropriate from the instructor concerning the academic performance of the student applicant in his or her course or any factor that may affect scheduling of any extension or examination privileges. The Committee will provide the name of the student involved and will indicate the nature of the request being considered by the Committee. No details will be provided to teaching faculty about the reasons underlying the request. This consultation may disclose the relief being sought and the name of the applicant, but does not disclose the basis for the request, which is kept confidential to the Committee. Any feedback received from the instructors is kept confidential by the Committee.

Appeals of Committee decisions are made to Faculty Board. As well, the Committee will, at the request of one or more of its members, refer a matter to Faculty Board. Procedures for appeals to Faculty Board are published in Rules and Regulations - Appeals from Decisions of the Academic Standing and Policies Committee.
