Facilities The Department of Biochemistry is located in the Health Sciences Complex, Botterell Hall. The research laboratories are well equipped to carry out a broad range of biochemical, cellular, and molecular biological studies. Additional specialized instrumentation and facilities are also available in the Department including: preparative ultracentrifuges, high pressure liquid and gas phase chromatographs, UV/visible and fluorescence spectrometers, scintillation counters, MALDI (matrix assisted laser desorption ionization) mass spectrometer, electroparamagnetic spectrometer, laser flash photolysis apparatus, X-ray crystallography imaging plate equipped with x-ray generator, 600mHz NMR spectrometer, calorimeters, surface plasmon resonance instrument, fluorescence-microscopy, tissue culture and bacterial containment laboratories, photographic darkrooms, cold rooms and warm rooms. Other services available to the Department include: oligonucleotide synthesis, DNA sequencing and peptide synthesis.
Financial Assistance Graduate students are encouraged to apply for financial support in the form of fellowships and studentships from external granting agencies. Graduate research assistantships funded from grants to faculty and teaching assistantships funded by the University are also available.
Fields of Research

Areas of study include: apolipoproteins and atherosclerosis; arthritis research; amyloidosis and Alzheimer's disease; blood coagulation and fibrinolysis and vascular disease; regulation of cell motility and cell morphology; smooth muscle and cardiac muscle contractility; protein crystallography; antifreeze proteins; calcium-dependent cysteine proteinases (calpains); membrane bioenergetics; natriuretic peptides and their receptors; aldo-keto reductases; vitamin D metabolism and cytochrome P450 isoforms; retinoic acid signalling; bioinformatics and theoretical biology; hormonal regulation of the prostate; multidrug resistance; cell cycle regulation; proto-oncogenes in cancer; regulation of gene expression and transcription factors, plant biochemistry, DNA repair.

Detailed information on research projects of faculty, and a list of their more recent publications, are available on the Department of Biochemistry website at  http://meds.queensu.ca/biochem/ .

Programs of Study
MASTER OF SCIENCE AND DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY
Applicants are accepted under the general regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Departmental requirements are: minimum upper second class honours degree or equivalent for entry into the M.Sc. program; and first class honours degree or M.Sc. degree in biochemistry for entry into the Ph.D. program.

The degree programs consist of course work, seminars, research, and the completion and defense of a thesis document. The scope and extent of the course work may vary with the previous experience of each applicant.
