Facilities Faculty Offices and Research laboratories of the “Physiology of Human Disease” Graduate Program are distributed within Botterell Hall and Kingston General Hospital. Biophysics, Cardiac, Neuroscience and respiratory foci are located on the 4th floor of Botterell Hall; the Gastrointestinal Diseases Research Unit (GIDRU) is located in Kingston General Hospital (KGH) and Cognitive Neuroscience offices are on Level 4 and 2 Botterell. Research laboratories of cross appointees in Cardiology, Gastroenterology, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Respirology are in KGH, with others across campus in Psychology, the School of Rehabilitation Therapy, the School of Kinesiology and Health Studies, and Psychiatry. The research laboratories are well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to support the research programs. There are extensive computer and experimental facilities for biophysics, imaging (e.g. cell calcium, FRET, fMRI, immunohistochemistry), chronic cardiorespiratory autonomic recordings, movement analysis systems etc. Excellent research facilities are also available to perform tissue culture and molecular biology.
Financial Assistance All Graduate students are considered for Queen's Fellowships but are also expected to apply for external awards, including fellowships. Graduate students may receive support from grants held by members of faculty, or from departmental funds. The program awards yearly the Abramsky and Chen Travel Awards to defray the expenses for students to travel to present their work at National and International Science Congresses. Opportunities to demonstrate undergraduate laboratories are available in the new School of Medicine Education building (opening 2011 fall).
Fields of Research Cardiovascular physiology; cell biophysics in cardiac, neuroscience and GI, cell physiology; cardiorespiratory physiology; gastrointestinal physiology; neuroscience; neuroendocrinology exercise physiology; muscle physiology; and the interests of cross-appointed staff.
Programs of Study MASTER OF SCIENCE AND DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY: Applicants are accepted under the general regulations of the School of Graduate Studies.
