Special Research

While thesis work for a graduate degree from the Department of Spanish must be done under the direction of the department, some of the graduate courses or their equivalent may be taken in another appropriate department at Queen's or at another approved university in Canada or abroad. Students following a four half-course programme must take and submit all course work in Spanish. Subject to Departmental approval, students following a six half-course programme may count one half-course taken in another language toward their degree. Subject to Departmental approval, students following an eight half-course programme may count up to two graduate half-course taken in another language toward their MA. Taking courses at another approved university in Canada or abroad requires special permission from the School of Graduate Studies and Research.

Similarly, through inter-university accreditation in Ontario's graduate schools, some course work already taken elsewhere in Ontario may apply to a graduate degree in the Department of Spanish at Queen's. At least fifty percent of course work must be completed at Queen's to qualify for a Queen's University degree.

Financial Assistance University scholarships, the Province of Ontario Graduate Scholarship, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and Special M.A. Scholarships are available to all students in open competition. Students can also apply for a departmental Teaching Assistantship?Fellowship.
Fields of Research The primary field of research is Hispanic literature and culture. Professors' research interests have included: Contemporary Literary Theory (especially Phenomenological Hermeneutics), Twentieth-Century Spanish American Narrative and Oral Narrative Traditions (D.F. Chamberlain), Feminist Criticism, Twentieth-Century Spanish American Narrative, Film, Latin American Jewish Studies (D.J. Mennell), Golden Age Literature (Theatre), Queer Theory (P. Thompson), Spanish Medieval Literature and Culture, Transatlantic Hispanic Studies, Mexican Colonial Literature (P. PROGRAM OF STUDY

MASTER OF ARTS

Applicants are accepted under the general regulations of the School of Graduate Studies. Applicants registered as preparatory or qualifying students may be required to take, in addition to specified course work, a general examination.

Three programs lead to the master's degree: 1) six half-courses and a short thesis of approximately 50 pages of text; 2) eight half-courses or 3) four half-courses and a thesis of approximately 100 pages. Theses are written in Spanish and follow the rules set out in the most recent MLA Style Manual. The program of study is determined by the Department's Graduate Studies Committee in consultation with the student early in the initial term of registration and subsequently submitted to the School of Graduate Studies for approval.

Studies may be completed in 24 months. The preparation of the short thesis or full thesis may proceed during any or all of the terms of the 24-month period. The half-courses are offered currently in the fall and winter terms only and are one term in length. All examinations and oral defenses take place during the fall and winter terms only.
