Welcome to CLST 207 Online for Summer 2012.
I have always enjoyed offering courses on this period in history, and I hope that by the end of this online version you will share my interest in this world, its achievements and the relevance of its history to the present day.
Your success in this type of course relies on your own personal efforts more than it does for one delivered in a regular classroom. You are expected to cover a large amount of material by yourself in only six weeks, and you will have to pace yourself accordingly so as not to become bogged down in a mass of detail. I have divided the material into weekly units of a reasonable size to help you through the course. Nonetheless, the course will require a considerable commitment of your time.
Some of the course units will contain picture files, websites or other material of general interest for you to consult as you read the textbook and unit notes. I have also referred in these units to maps in the textbook. Please use all these links and references as much as possible whenever a site or object is mentioned in the textbook, the unit notes, and when you are completing your assignments. I believe that seeing locations and artifacts, even if only in pictures and on maps, will help you understand much more fully the cultures you are studying.
Good luck with the course!
