“Virtual” Office Hours: I will hold two separate two-hour periods of “virtual office” hours each week. During this time I will be available via Skype (chat/voice/video). I will also be available by appointment.

Message from Karl Hardy:

Students enrolling in DEVS 240, a new online course in Culture and Development taught by instructor Karl Hardy, will investigate what culture means and how it is relevant to the concept of development.

DEVS 240 will cover topics including: the importance of culture and historicizing culture within development studies; power, hegemony, and paradigm shifts; neo-liberal cultures; universal human rights; and popular culture in art, film, literature, and sport.

Karl Hardy is no stranger to online and distance learning. After obtaining his undergraduate degree at the University of Washington in Seattle, he did his Master’s degree as a distance education at Prescott College in Arizona, while living in Indiana.

Currently working towards his PhD in Cultural Studies at Queen’s, Hardy says:

One of the advantages of online education is the incredible opportunity for independent study.

Having previously been on the learning end of online courses, he is uniquely placed to help his own online students.

Hardy will interface with students through a combination of means including Moodle, virtual office hours, video and audio link-ups, chats, email, and telephone.

Of the new DEVS 240 online course, Hardy says:

I'm very excited for the opportunity to act as instructor and to work with students studying such complex and important concepts as "culture" and "development. I look forward to making use of the new online technologies that will definitely make for a more enriching experience both for the students and myself.
