Lesson and Assignment Schedule

Each module in this online course consists of several components. The student is expected to study the assigned lecture notes and online resources; read the assigned sections of the textbook; review the posted lectures; complete on line quizzes at the end of each 3-week module, attend and participate in one to two online discussions per module and write one assignment per module that are linked to the online discussions.

Unlike other online courses you may have taken, this is not a self-paced course. There is an interactive component to this course, in the form of discussions and quizzes. We have included these components to help you keep up with the reading, and to promote (we hope!) deeper thinking and better learning through working with your classmates.

The discussions and quizzes require your active participation on particular dates throughout the year. We expect that you will be available via high speed internet on these dates.

Listed in the syllabus you will find the dates that you really need internet access, so that you can prepare to be available. These dates can be found in the course outline as well as the course calendar. These are the weeks of the 4 Quizzes, the 5 Discussions, and the 4 Assignment due dates.

Quizzes: Module quizzes are held once every 3 weeks. The Module quizzes will be made up of 25 multiple choice questions based on the text and course notes material covered in the previous 3 weeks. Quizzes will test ONLY the relevant module; they are not cumulative. The Module quizzes are 45 minutes in length and can be written from any computer with high speed internet access. The quiz will be open for three days, from Wednesday morning (12:01AM) until Friday at midnight (11:59PM). You can log in at any time, but the quiz will close 45 minutes after you log in. The quiz is designed to test your understanding of the material covered in that module, and is to be completed ONLY by the student who logged in and with no study aids such as the text, your notes, or the internet. This exam is designed to test what you have learned and understood, and not your ability to look up information.

Discussions: For the Discussions, you will need access to the online Discussion board on the first day of each Discussion to submit your preparatory work, and you'll also be expected to participate in the Discussion periodically over the next four days (although you can miss days if you are organized). The Discussion board will open for five days, opening at noon on the Wednesday of the Discussion week and close at midnight on Sunday (11:59PM).

Assignments: Finally, assignments have submission deadlines -- you will need Internet access to submit your assignments on or before the due date. The four assignments are coupled to the Discussions such that participation in the latter should help you with the former. Assignments will be made available on Sunday at midnight, and are due seven days later, at midnight (11:59PM) on the following Saturday.
