Message from the Instructor

My name is Vincent Sacco and I am your instructor in this course in the sociology of deviance. I have been a professor at Queen’s University since 1984 and I have focused most of my teaching and research in the areas of crime, deviance and social control. I think you will find the material in this course both interesting and challenging. One of the real benefits of studying this field is that much of what we learn requires us to revise our everyday understandings of the nonconformist in society. You will discover that much of what you might have take for granted about “deviants” and “criminals” requires critical scrutiny. While the course is mainly concerned with theoretical ideas, you will discover that much of what you learn has practical application when we try make sense of our own lives, the lives of friends and families and the deeds and misdeeds of those we see on the evening news. I want you to engage the material in energetic fashion and to seek clarification for anything you have trouble with. Both the teaching assistant and I will do what we can to ensure your mastery of the material.
