Application Process

** Details for the application process for next excavation season will be posted once its dates are determined. The information below outlines the process that was in place for the most recent season (6 weeks in May-June, 2012).

In addition to the field staff, there will be spaces for up to sixteen volunteer excavators. No previous excavation experience is required, although an interest in the ancient Mediterranean cultures, archaeology, or the Near East region is necessary, along with a willingness to work hard in sometimes difficult conditions. Volunteers will be involved in all aspects of excavation, finds processing, and recording.

For the 2012 season, applications should reach Dr. Reeves during the Fall term of 2011 and in no cases after December 2, 2011. In order to be considered for the project, you will need to submit a one to two page Statement of Interest explaining why you wish to go on the excavation and how the experience will relate to your overall career plans, as well as a copy of your current academic transcript.  Applications will be evaluated according to (i) relevance to student’s career plans, (ii) academic performance, (iii) motivation and preparation, and (iv) clarity of objectives and expectations. Priority will be given to Queen’s University students and Classics concentrators, but students from other universities and departments are encouraged to apply as well. Prior completion of CLST 129 (Introduction to Archaeology) or its equivalent is strongly recommended for all applicants.  Applications can be given to Dr. Reeves in person (512 Watson Hall) or by email or dropped off in the Classics Department's main office (505 Watson Hall).

Due to new permit requirements imposed by the Government of Jordan, security forms for the whole excavation team must be submitted by mid January. If you do not hold a current passport in early January (which must be valid for 6 months following the end of the excavation), you will not be eligible to participate.
