  • Teaching Assistantships Avaliable Fall 2012

TEACHING ASSISTANT POSITIONS – FALL AND WINTER 2012-2013

The following Teaching Assistant positions are available for the Fall and Winter Terms 2012-13 in the Department of Community Health and Epidemiology.  Rate of pay for these positions is $37.88 per hour and duration of work is 12 weeks.   Hours per week will be 8 unless otherwise noted. 

Note:  TA  hours per week constitute time allowed to be spent on non-thesis work and so would need to be considered in view of the 10 hours per week average allowed over the course of a year on non-thesis work. 

 Students should note that they are still expected to meet all milestones for their own MSc/MPH/PhD work if they receive a teaching assistantship.  The department recommends that you talk  with your supervisor before accepting any TA position.

Students may apply for more than one position.  Please note order of preference.

 

FOR FALL TERM

1.       Two positions  available as TA for:

EPID 801  Introduction to Epidemiology, Instructor:  Kristan Aronson

The TA will work with the professor responsible for the course and with other TAs and will: 1) plan, prepare and lead tutorials and review  sessions; 2) support and encourage student participation in group discussions designed to reinforce understanding of the epidemiological concepts introduced during class and through readings; and 3) mark assignments and exams, and have office hours to provide assistance to students).

Qualifications for this position:  success in EPID 801, EPID 804 and EPID 821, a firm grasp of material covered in Introduction to Epidemiology (EPID 801), excellent communication skills, and a demonstrated
ability to work well with others.

 

2.       Two positions available as TA for:

EPID 821   Introductory Biostatistics, Coordinator:  Paul Peng

TA Duties will include:  provide two  hours of  office time per week to  assist students on an individual basis with biostatistics questions;  two hours per week on homework marking,  provide two  hours  per week to assist students during  SAS lab  and two  hours running a tutorial section of EPID 821 (Thursdays from 8:30 to  10:30 am).

Qualifications for this position:  successful completion of EPID 821 and EPID 822.

 

3.       One position available as TA for: 

EPID 803  Health Services and Policy Applications:  Instructor:  Ana Johnson

TA duties will include:    Coordinate and post instructor notes each week (1 hour); Coordinating the class assignments (9 hours); Marking assignments (35 hours)

Total time required:  56 hours

 No prerequisite classes required.

 

4.       One position available as TA for:

EPID  826  Determinants of Health:   Instructor: Beatriz Alvarado

TA duties will include:   3 hours per week  to 1) Supervise half of the students’ final assignment projects,  2) to  evaluate their presentations;  3) help to develop objectives, analyze and interpret data if project required and 4)   to assist the professor by preparing case studies and lecturing three topics over the semester.   Topics assigned for lecturing will be given according to previous experience.

Prerequisites:   Experience analyzing data in SPSS or SAS;  relevant previous work on determinants of health/inequities in health; familiarity  with relevant social epidemiology or public health background

 

5.       One position available as TA for:

EPID 825  Foundations of Public Health Practice: Instructor:  Kate O’Connor.

TA duties will include:  Assist in marking student assignments for approximately 4 of the classes;  provide guidance to students in the preparation of major assignment,  assist in marking the final assignment (submitted in two sections) , assist in coordinating  a student conference and marking oral presentations, averaging out to  8 hours per week.

No prerequisite classes required.

 

FOR WINTER TERM

  1.  Two positions available as TA for:

 EPID 301 Principles of Epidemiology  (undergraduate course), Instructors: Helene Ouellette-Kuntz, Harriet Richardson

 

Teaching assistant duties will include: helping the instructor with lecturing, setting and marking assignments and exams, leading some tutorial sessions and setting office hours to provide assistance to students. Details will be determined with instructor. 

Qualifications for this position:  successful completion of  EPID 801, EPID 821 and EPID 804, a firm grasp of material covered in Intro to Epi and a demonstrated ability to clearly convey this  material. 

 

2,   One TA position available for:

EPID 804, Intermediate Epidemiology, Instructors:  Will King, Will Pickett 

Duties will include office time per week to assist students on an individual basis with questions, marking of assignments, participation in class and sharing in the marking of mid-term exams.

Prerequisites for this position:  successful completion of EPID 801 and EPID 804.

 

3.  One TA position available for:

EPID 812 Program Evaluation, Instructor: Duncan Hunter

Duties will include:

Work with the professor responsible for the course: 1) plan, prepare and lead tutorials and review  sessions; 2) support and encourage student participation in group discussions designed to reinforce understanding of the  concepts introduced during class and through readings; and 3) mark assignments and exams, and have office hours to provide assistance to students).

 

4.  One position  available as TA for:

EPID 822   Intermediate Biostatistics, Coordinator:  Paul Peng

TA Duties will include:  provide two  hours of  office time per week to  assist students on an individual basis with biostatistics questions;  two  hours per week on marking homework assignments,  two  hours  per week to assist students during  SAS lab  and two  hours running a tutorial section

Prerequisites  for this position:  successful completion of EPID 821  and EPID 822.

 

5.  One position available as TA for:

EPID 817  Foundations of Cancer Control, Instructor: Harriet Richardson

TA duties will include:   

Helping to set the course outline including organization of guest speakers; Assisting in the development of the two major term papers required for this course; Preparing and lecturing on selected course materials; Grading the term papers and descriptive epidemiology papers in collaboration with course instructor; Attending some of the classes and helping to stimulate class discussion; Being available outside of class to students for questions and extra assistance on course materials

The appointee must have successfully completed  EPID  801 and  804.  Successful completion of EPID 817 and experience in cancer control-related research will be an advantage.

 

6.  One position as TA for:

EPID 828 Infectious Diseases, Instructor: Ann Jolly

TA duties will include:  

Helping develop the web content (forums for discussion); Grading  the exam and feedback on the exam and answering general questions on the assignments;  Coming  to class as prepared as possible to help with discussion.

Prerequisites

Have taken Epid 828 before or  have a significant background in infectious diseases;  Be familiar with Moodle ; Have relevant epidemiology or public health background
