| Project Title: | Communicable Disease Surveillance |
Description: Maria is carrying out an evaluation of Ontario beach water quality over time and by beach location, using a microbiological, GIS and statistical tool kit, for the assessment of overall beach water quality and the geospatial distribution of beach water quality. She will also be comparing two methods to detect water contaminating indicator organisms; the traditional cell culture method and the newer QPCR method. | Project Title: | Conducting a risk assessment of the potable water produced aboard ships using reverse osmosis technology. |
Description: Osama is working on three separate projects. 1) Conducting a risk assessment on the production of shipboard water in Littoral Zones. This has potential for publication; 2) Providing source water quality reports to various Canadian Forces bases in case they need to produce water in emergency situations. This is an internal information report, and; 3) Exploring the possibility of using GIS to plot temporal and spatial air quality data from Afghanistan with a main focus on Kabul and the capital region. The basic air quality variables are measurement levels of PM10, PM2.5, metals, and VOCs taken sporadically. The goal would be to map out spatial and temporal trends in air quality as well as displaying a visual overlay of regional air quality over Canadian Forces personnel places of work, training, and residence. This also has a potential for publication. |
| Practicum Location: | KFL&A Public Health Unit - Family Health Team |
| Project Title: | Evaluation of the implementation of the enhanced 18-month well-baby assessment through a determinant of health lens. |
Description: The project that Veronia is involved in at Kingston, Frontenac, and Lennox & Addington (KFL&A) Public Health aims to determine the proportion of 18-month well baby visits completed in 2010 and 2011 in the region’s Family Health Teams. The 18-month well-baby visit is the last routine visit for children prior to school entry in a series of scheduled visits with primary care. In conjunction with the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, new fee codes were introduced in October 2009 as an incentive to primary care physicians for conducting an enhanced well-baby visit at 18-months. This project is meant to describe the pattern of use of this billing code or equivalent codes (for nurse practitioners) between January 1, 2010 to December 31, 2011. Data relating to primary healthcare provider type, patient socioeconomic status, and distance to healthcare provider will be collected and examined for eligible infants in the KFL&A regions via electronic medical records. With this data, Veronica will examine if the 18-month well baby visits vary according to socioeconomic status and/or geographic distance to the infant’s primary care provider in audits of the Family Health Teams. Upon completion of the audits, she will deliver individualized reports to each Family Health Team and an overall evaluation report for Public Health that will be inclusive of all the data collected from Family Health Teams. |

| Project Title: | Family and School Health Unit - Parenting Outreach Strategy |
Description: From 2005 to 2009, participation in social networking sites, including Facebook, more than quadrupled. Social media is expected to continue its upward trend of usage, and reach more individuals, transcending all age demographics. The Ottawa Public Health Family and School Health Team is taking advantage of this new information dissemination opportunity by launching its own Facebook page aimed at Ottawa parents of children and youth aged 0-18. The targeted launch date is mid-August 2012. Before the page can be launched, a literature review regarding parent outreach engagement activities through social media is required, and a needs assessment to gather information and opinions from Ottawa parents about desired messaging channels and message content must be conducted. This will include a survey. Steven will be involved in this innovative project during his summer practicum. The information gathered through the literature review and needs assessment will enable the Family Health Team to make evidence-based decisions and plan appropriate messaging strategies through the proposed parenting Facebook page. |
