hi all- Meredith here.
Yep, that’s right: I made it to Friday. I have to say, there were moments earlier this week when I really didn’t think it was going to happen. I was just feeling so overwhelmed by the massive to-do list, and by the anticipation of my upcoming teaching, all on top of the usual grad school stuff: work on thesis project.
But I am very pleased to report that I had a great bunch of kids to teach as part of this week’s SEEDS program. They were smart, funny and really engaged. They seemed to really enjoy the writing exercises, had lots of things to say in discussion and ultimately, left me feeling more optimistic about the state of kids today (makes me sound old, no?).
And although I was worried about all the teaching distracting me from my true grad school task-at-hand (ie. writing the thesis project) I actually did ok in the end there too. It took me a couple of days to get going, but I managed to put in some solid half-days of good reading and writing.
Actually, I spent a good couple of hours with a book I ended up finding accidentally: it was on a friend’s desk, and when I asked him about it, he told me it had been checked out of the library by a friend (currently out of town) and had just been recalled — she’d asked him to drop it off for her. I seemed right up my alley, so I asked if I could return it for her and ended up cramming a couple of chapters with good results.
When I went to drop it off at the library (a day after the day I was supposed to drop it off), I asked the librarian whether I would owe any money for handing it in late. “Nah,” she said, “you usually have a week to bring it back.”
“Ha!” I thought to myself as I walked away from the circulation desk. “I probably could have hung on to that book all weekend!”
But the fact is, that thinking I only had it for a day meant that I really had to get focused and get reading. And it worked! Tight deadlines really do the trick.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I feel like I’ll be lying low this weekend. I’ve got a bunch of reading and writing to do, and the forecast suggests it’s going to rain all weekend anyway. Bah.
