Collective bargaining between Queen’s University and the United Steelworkers (USW) began in November 2011. On July 5, after several days of further negotiations with the assistance of a provincial conciliation officer, Queen’s University and the USW are pleased to announce that they have reached a tentative first collective agreement.

Staff pay update

As talks toward a first contract continue between Queen’s and the union representing general support staff, the university has moved forward with its regular compensation processes for employees in grades 2-9 who are not members of United Steelworkers (USW) bargaining unit local 2010.

Staff contract talks get underway

First contract negotiations are scheduled to start later this month between the university and United Steelworkers Local 2010, the union representing general staff at Queen’s (grades 2-9).

Several meetings are scheduled between November 15 and the end of the year. Additional dates will be set for 2012.

University Board ratifies collective agreement with QUFA

The new agreement between the University and the Queen’s University Faculty Association (QUFA) is now official, with the Queen’s Board of Trustees voting to ratify the agreement earlier today.

Members of QUFA ratified the agreement in a three-day vote late last week.

In unionized workplaces, during contract negotiations, collective bargaining committees can reach a tentative agreement on a new contract but that tentative agreement is almost always subject to ratification by the “principals” of both committees. The university’s principals are the members of the Board of Trustees or of a designated sub-committee of the Board. The union’s principals are the members of the bargaining unit. It is up to the bargaining unit members to accept or reject the tentative agreement. A majority vote in favour is necessary to approve – or “ratify” – the tentative agreement.
