School of Music Teaching Award

Nature of Award

This acknowledgement is awarded annually to a member of the music faculty who has been nominated by students for their exceptional dedication to the School of Music both inside and outside of the classroom.

Nomination Criteria

Any member of the School of Music faculty is eligible to be nominated for this award. The award recipient will demonstrate some/all of the following desired qualities:

  • Motivates students to learn and facilitates in-depth learning
  • Demonstrates exceptional teaching skills
  • Is available outside of class time for consultations with students
  • Displays a genuine interest in students' personal development and well-being

Nomination Procedure

There will be a 2-week nomination period in the Winter Term of each year whereby students can fill out an application form to nominate a member of the School of Music faculty they feel has provided exceptional dedication and commitment towards the success of students, inside and outside of the classroom. All submissions must be completed by the students in full and will be submitted in a sealed envelope provided. All incomplete applications will be disqualified and discarded. (Submission options: Music DSC Inbox in the office, Nominations box situated on the DSC board – will staple an envelope to each application form so that they will be sealed)

Selection Process

A committee of 6-8 students (representatives on the Music Department Student Council of each undergraduate year, along with the Chair, B.A rep, and Con. Ed rep.), concentrating in music from a multitude of years will review the applications and statements. They will come to a consensus as to which faculty member is most deserving of the award based on the submissions. Here are some factors that will be considered in the selection process:

  • How well does the instructor motivate or charge their students with enthusiasm for learning?
  • Has real learning taken place under the instructor and the instructor is not simply a popular person who is enjoyed by the students?
  • Does the instructor use novel or innovative instructional methods in attempting to convey the material to their class?
  • Has the instructor demonstrated a true commitment to the education of Queen's students over and above the norm?

Presentation of Award

The award will be presented annually at the final School of Music Concert in March, marking the close of another successful year. The recipient will receive a certificate acknowledging them of the award and their name will be engraved upon the plaque for the year.
