Many institutions have set global competence of graduates as a key strategic goal to meet the increasing demand from employers for employees with intercultural and multilingual skills. Many institutions are moving toward a model that weaves language and culture across the curriculum by engaging stakeholders across campus to collaborate and envision a new approach to language and cultural experiences outside of traditional language courses.

Learn from experts as they explore existing models, suggest how to build a "culture and language across the curriculum" program, and set guidelines on how you can develop a customized program for your own campus.

Presenters

Diana Davies
Princeton University

Diana Davies is the vice provost for international initiatives at Princeton University (2008-). In this role, she works with academic leaders and senior administrators to support and promote all forms of international activities at Princeton. Previously, she served as director of international programs at the University of Iowa (2000-2008) and was the assistant director of international education at Binghamton University (1997-2000). While at Binghamton, she also served as the assistant director and then director of the LxC (Languages Across the Curriculum) program and taught Russian language and literature.

A graduate of Indiana University with bachelor's degrees in political science and Slavic languages and literature, Davies earned a PhD in comparative literature from the University of Rochester. Davies serves on the Executive Council of the Association for International Education Administrators and the Boards of Directors for Princeton in Beijing and Princeton in Africa. She is one of the founders of the CLAC consortium and its current chair. She regularly leads workshops and makes presentations on CLAC at universities that are developing their own programs as well as at meetings of organizations such as AIEA, the International Studies Association, Modern Languages Association, ACE, the American Association for Applied Linguistics, and the Ivy-Plus Consortium for Language Teaching and Learning.

Dr. Suronda Gonzalez
Binghamton University

Dr. Suronda Gonzalez is the director of Binghamton University’s nationally acclaimed Languages across the Curriculum (LxC) program. She is also the founding director of the Global Studies Minor, and was instrumental in developing the curriculum for the Global Studies online courses. Both programs offer students an opportunity to more fully integrate the international elements of their undergraduate experience (including language and study abroad) into their major in more meaningful ways. Gonzalez currently serves as the director for the University’s Summer Fulbright Institute as well as the SUNY-COIL campus nodal coordinator. Gonzalez holds a PhD in U.S. history from Binghamton University, where she now works with faculty interested in internationalizing their courses and leads a pedagogical training seminar for graduate students each semester. She has presented and facilitated at numerous workshops focused on using CLAC strategies to enhance 21st century undergraduate education. Currently, she is vice chair of the Cultures and Languages across the Curriculum Consortium, and continues to pursue her interest in internationalizing the teaching of U.S. history.

C.K. Kwai
University of Maine

C.K. Kwai currently directs the Office of International Programs at University of Maine. He has worked in the field of international education (education abroad, international student & scholar services, and international enrollment management) for more than 15 years. He has extensive experience in all aspects of international education at the higher education system level (University of North Carolina System) and individual higher education institutions, from developing new study abroad/exchange agreements, foreign credential evaluation, developing international student programming to international admission and recruitment.

Besides C.K.'s professional experience in international education, he has a PhD in educational policy and administration with an emphasis and interest in international education from the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities and an MBA. C.K. also holds an adjunct instructor appointment at the Vietnamese Germany University in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and has taught and presented at a number of NAFSA annual and regional Conferences, NAFSA Summer Institute, higher education institutions around the world, and the NASPA national conference. C.K. currently holds leadership roles in the NAFSA Trainer Corps and NAFSA's Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship Knowledge Community.
