Discipline-Based Teaching

The Centre for Teaching and Learning aims to enhance the quality of student learning at Queen's by

  • providing services and programs to support the instructional development activities of individual teachers and academic units; and
  • encouraging university policies and practices that promote good teaching.
  • A broad arrange of approaches can assist in developing teaching initiatives

Departmental-Focused Workshops

The CTL offers a number of departmental-focused workshops. Some of the teaching matters are listed below.

Clinical Teaching

This session offers an introduction to the role of the clinical supervisor and the principles and skills of clinical instruction. We will focus on setting realistic objectives for the clinical setting, selecting teaching methods that support self-directed learning and evidence-based practice, and designing effective processes for giving and receiving feedback.

Lab and Science Teaching

Laboratory and practical work are an important aspect of learning in many science disciplines. This session will focus on the purposes of labs as well as strategies for lab teaching that encourage individual and collaborative work among students.

Teaching Matters

A program designed to foster high quality teaching and learning in the Faculties of Applied Science, and Arts and Science by supporting its new faculty members.

Peer Consultation

Feedback on teaching from peers is a valuable approach to help faculty reflect upon the quality of their courses and their teaching. We encourage a variety of methods for collecting feedback from different sources, with particular attention given to the different purposes of evaluation, and the interpretation of results.

Teaching Observations are used to encourage faculty to reflect critically on their teaching. The faculty member usually arranges these observations with a member of the CTL and if you prefer, this observation could be video-taped (upon faculty request only). Feedback will be provided through a post-interview discussion. This sharing of ideas may stimulate new ideas to try in the classroom, as well as reassure the faculty member about teaching practices that are effective and areas that should be addressed.
