Doctoral Research

I approach my research as museum practitioner, visitor and cultural producer.  Broadly, I am interested in the issue of ‘museum-making,’ the authorial nature of museum space, and the idea of the museum as an ongoing historical, social and moral relationship through which power, meaning and even identity might be provoked, assigned, signified and contested.  More specifically, my research considers the emancipatory possibilities of the post-museum (which is defined through its ability to generate and respond to experiential encounters) within a national museum context.

I like to think of my research as an ethical response to the vagaries of museum practice.  I am curious about the relationship between pedagogy and policy within national museum space. I am curious about the individuals who animate, manifest and make possible museum space, and how ongoing interplays of compliance and/or resistance influence, enhance or diminish this particular intersection.     I suggest that the both the conceptual and practical parameters of the post-museum emerge from the intersection of pedagogy and policy within museum space and that evidence of pedagogy and policy is manifested through, and therefore able to be traced, through exhibitionary practices. I also suggest that the individual agency of individuals working with and within museum space provides a lens through which to consider the possibilities of the post-museum. 

Both pedagogy and policy are brought to life through the work and actions of individuals, working separately and in tandem.  In probing the national museum’s manifestation as a pedagogical intervention within the lives of its constituents is critical to redefining its relational boundaries as both limitation and resource.  I hope to galvanize critical debate, across constituencies, so we might truly engage with post-museum possibilities - transforming not only how we comprehend the narratives we encounter within museums, but also how we, as members of diverse constituencies, create them.
