DEFENCE MANAGEMENT STUDIES

The Queen's University Defence Management Studies (DMS) was established in 1996 with financial support from the Canadian Department of National Defence (DND). With continuing support from DND, through the Security and Defence Forum, and other donors, the program offered teaching, research and conference programs, all designed to build expertise in the field and to contribute to wider debates within the defence community.

Under the general direction of Dr. Douglas Bland, who held the Chair in Defence Management Studies (1985-2011) and Ugurhan Berkok (2011-12), the program engaged the interest and support of scholars, members of the Canadian Forces, public servants, and participants in the defence industry in the examination and teaching of the management of national defence policy and the Canadian Forces. The program was carefully designed to focus on the development of theories, concepts, and skills required to make and to manage decisions within the Canadian defence establishment. An important part of this initiative was to build strong links to other countries. The Defence Management Studies program was ably supported by administrators, Lois Jordan (1986-2006) and Heather Salsbury (2006-2012).

DMS publications, including the “Claxton papers,” are available by purchase or downloading, as indicated on the DMS Publications List.
