A Masque of Mr Punch

Written by Robertson Davies

A staged reading directed by John Lazarus, performed by DRAM100 students.

8:00 PM, Wednesday, October 26, in the Vogt Theatre, Carruthers Hall, Queen’s campus

Renowned novelist, playwright and Queen’s student Robertson Davies was a lifelong fan of Punch and Judy – the 300-year-old tradition of English puppet shows for children which, in its amoral violence, makes South Park look like Sesame Street. In 1960, Davies imagined Punch, Judy, and their ragtag entourage invading Canada and confronting our repressed and conformist media establishment. The resultant one-act satire, “À Masque of Mr Punch”, features clown violence, spousal assault, airborne babies, devils from Hell, two Punch-and-Judy shows (one traditional, and one as written by Shakespeare), and merciless mockery of playwrights, professors, publicists, patrons, critics, adjudicators, CBC types and Stratford actors. The Queen’s Drama Department presents a staged reading of “A Masque of Mr Punch”, directed by John Lazarus, at 8:00 PM, Wednesday, October 26, in the Vogt Theatre, Carruthers Hall, Queen’s campus, with discussion, munchies and beverages to follow – all free of charge, but with limited seating, so come early!
