Medial English

 

Program: Bachelor of Arts (Honours)

Plan Code: ENGLXXXX-A or XXXXENGL-A (where XXXX stands for the code of the other Medial subject)

Requirements: 42.0 ENGL units in combination with a medial plan in another subject, plus sufficient electives to total 120.0 units (114.0 units for students admitted prior to September 2017). To qualify for the English Medial, students must distribute their ENGL units according to the following rules.

Core Course 1A 6.0 units in English 100 “Introduction to the Study of Literature”
Core Course 1B 6.0 units in English 200 “History of Literature in English”
Core Course 1C 3.0 units in English 290 “Seminar in Literary Interpretation”
Core Course 1D 6.0 units from English 305–339 Group I small lecture requirement (pre-1800 literature)
Core Course 1E 6.0 units from English 340–389 Group II & III small lecture requirement (post-1800 literature)
Option Courses    
Option Courses 2A 6.0 units from 400-level ENGL 400-level seminars
Option Courses 2B 3.0 units from 200-level ENGL or above One 200- or 400-level half course
Option Courses 2C 6.0 units from 200-level ENGL or above or certain courses in other subjects

Recommendations

The Department recommends that Medials take the following number of ENGL units each year:

Year 1: 6.0 100-level units (ENGL100)

Year 2: 12.0 200-level units (ENGL 200/6.0 and 290/3.0, plus 3.0 additional ENGL units)

Year 3: 12.0 300-level units

Year 4: 6.0 400-level units + any remaining Option units at the 200 level or above

The Department also recommends that Medials take ENGL 292/6.0 Introduction to Literary Theory and Criticism.
