Sample English Plans

Whether students are registered in an English Major, an English Medial, or an English Minor Plan, the number of 200-level units they complete in their second year is an important factor in determining their course selection in third and fourth years. Therefore, students entering their second year should be sure to map out in advance a viable trajectory through their English Plan. Consultations with the Undergraduate Chair or individual English instructors may prove invaluable in this regard.

  • English Major Plan: Students enrolled in an English Major Plan will take 18.0 ENGL units in each of years 2, 3, and 4, on average.
  • English Medial Plan: Students enrolled in an English Medial Plan will take 12.0 ENGL units in each of years 2, 3, and 4, on average.
  • English Minor Plan: Students enrolled in an English Minor Plan will take 12.0 ENGL units in one of years 2, 3, and 4, and 6.0 units in the other 2 years, on average.

The Department recommends that, where possible, students enrolled in a Major Plan take 21.0 units from ENGL at the 200 level in their second year.

The following table provides examples of a typical distribution of courses over the four years of an English Major, Medial, or Minor Plan.
