Environmental Studies Research Day

Date: Monday April 27 2015

Where: Beamish-Munro Hall Rm 313ab

Time: 9 am to 4 pm  approximately with set up from 8 am

Schedule still in Preparation

Format: First Year MES- Presentation approximately 5 to 10 minutes including questions.  Most use Powerpoint slides.  You may have some results or you may have ideas in development.  Present what you have.  See below for examples.

Second Year MES- Poster presentations.  In previous years we sized the posters to 36" x 24".  This year we will give you the option of a full size 48" x 36" poster. If you are attending a conference before Research Day, you may choose to use the same poster.  The School pays the cost of printing.  Please remember to size your slide to the finished dimensions so it can be printed easily.  Most use Powerpoint to design the poster.  I ask that it be converted to pdf for printing.  I will need the posters by the morning of Friday April 24 for printing.  See below for examples.  This year we will adopt the conference style poster session format.  Students will stand with their posters and those attending will circulate around to view the posters and ask questions.

PhD - All years- Three-Minute Thesis format.  One slide, three minutes to talk.

Good Presentation Examples from Past Research Days:

First Year MES:  Click on the links for handouts of the Powerpoint Presentations.

Example 1

Example 2

Example 3

Example 4

These examples are handouts made from the Powerpoint slide presentations. I saved the presentations this way because they are smaller and perhaps easier to follow when you are deciding how to design yours.

You should prepare a presentation that we can load to a laptop so it is ready to go when your turn comes up.  Don't turn yours into handouts.

These are good examples for this type of presentation.

Bad example

All except the bad example were designed on a 36" x 24" slide in Powerpoint.  You set your slide size to the poster size you want so scaling is not a problem.

Here are some tips from Dr. Trevor Hill on poster design.  While these are for a conference presentation and some details do not pertain to this event, the content is valuable.  Link to PDF (4962 KB).
