The River Institute’s Board of Directors has awarded the 2013 River Award to Dr. David Lean and Dr. Peter Hodson.
Dr. Lean initiated the very first research program at the River Institute in 1994 through a partnership with the University of Ottawa. The goal was to undertake a global assessment of the health of the St. Lawrence River, and it started a research program that the River Institute continues today. Over the years, Dr. Lean has published over 100 research articles about the St. Lawrence River, and supervised many students at the River Institute. Dr. Lean has participated in key programs and committees at the River Institute including management and fund-raising committees, the St. Lawrence River Restoration Council, and the Annual River Symposium.
Dr. Peter Hodson is another critical partner in the development of scientific research and training at the River Institute. As a professor at Queen’s University, one of Dr. Hodson’s first outreach initiatives with the River Institute was to develop a joint field course in Ecotoxicology. This course was the first in an ongoing series of extremely successful university field courses offered jointly by Queen’s University, Ottawa University, and the River Institute. Over the past decade, Dr. Hodson has been a member of the River Institute’s Research Advisory Committee; a special advisor to the St. Lawrence River Restoration Council; Guest Chair of the River Conference Series; and a highly valued collaborator and student advisor with the River Institute’s research programs. Both recipients have made a significant contribution to our knowledge and understanding of the St. Lawrence River ecosystem, and are equally deserving of the 2013 River Award.
