Description:

Developing Extractivism: Chinese investments in Brazilian agribusiness and infrastructure for South American integration

Presented by:  Dr. Gustavo Oliveira

When Chinese investments spiked in Brazil in 2010 they triggered widespread concern that such resource-seeking investments and “land grabbing” for agricultural exports would further “de-industrialize” Brazil and condemn the country to a dependence on natural resource extraction with high environmental costs. This talk reports on intensive fieldwork undertaken in both Brazil and China to determine the nature, extent and consequences of Chinese investment in Brazilian resources. Combining ethnography with a deep political ecology interrogation of infrastructure building and resource extraction, this talk reveals some of the most significant new transformations in the international political economy of natural resource extraction through agroindustrial expansion and infrastructure development.
