"THE AUSPICIOUS PORT OF SURAT: REFLECTIONS ON A MUGHAL COSMOPOLITAN CENTRE"

Consolidated in the mid sixteenth century by an Ottoman notable, the port of Surat grew to be the preeminent maritime center of the Mughal empire in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. A fair amount of attention has been paid to its trading dimensions. This talk will show that the port was equally a cosmopolitan hub for inter-religious interaction, where many different intellectual traditions came together. It draws on rich materials over two hundred years, from about 1540 to 1750.Consolidated in the mid sixteenth century by an Ottoman notable, the port of Surat grew to be the preeminent maritime center of the Mughal empire in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
