Description:

Jeroen van Merriënboer, Professor of Learning & Instruction, Research Director, School of Health Profession Education (SHE), Maastricht University, Netherlands.

Dr. van Merrienboer has been trained as an experimental psychologist at the VU University Amsterdam and received a PhD in Educational Sciences from the University of Twente (1990). His main area of expertise is learning and instruction in the health professions, in particular instructional design and the use of new media in innovative learning environments. He has published widely on cognitive load theory, four-component instructional design (4C/ID, see www.tensteps.info), and lifelong learning in the professions. He holds several academic awards for his publications and his international contributions. His books Training Complex Cognitive Skills and Ten Steps to Complex Learning had a major impact on the field of instructional design and have been translated in several languages. He has published over 350 articles and book chapters and has a Hirsch-index of 75 (see profile on Google Scholar). More than 35 PhD students completed their theses under his supervision.
