Without Zebra by Sydney Hart

Art and Media Lab, 12 - 18 November 2017

11:00am - 5:00pm

Inspired by the zebra mussel, and the histories of the St Lawrence River it has recently brought to light, this media installation investigates representations of transnational flows along the river and its international waterways. The St Lawrence Seaway, notably, has radically re-shaped access to the river from the 1950s, displacing several communities for whom the waterfront was vital, and allowing ocean-going vessels to move cargo between the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes. Such vessels also unwittingly carried along the zebra mussel, and thereby introduced the species into North American waters. The proliferation of zebra mussels has also made the St Lawrence clearer, so that flooded structures on the riverbed have strangely become visible from above. Likewise, Without Zebra aims to clarify how the Seaway's infrastructures have altered perceptions of the river, and determined how some forms of transnational mobility are prioritized over others. The exhibition thereby draws from various photographic images of the St Lawrence, to create visualizations of big (visual culture) data and examine the systems of power that shape perceptions of this international space. What can we learn from the processes that make some flows more visible than others?
