Classics Presents Dr. Gareth Williams "Received Wisdom: Celibacy,Cicero,& the Case against Marriage in Barbaro's Venice"

When:
Monday, February 28, 2022
4:30 PM – 6:00 PM
Where:
Description:

Dr. Gareth Williams, Anthon Professor of Latin Languages and Literature, Department of Classics, Columbia University

Received Wisdom: Celibacy, Cicero, and the Case against Marriage in Ermolao Barbaro’s Quattrocento Venice

This talk features the vastly erudite Venetian humanist, Ermolao Barbaro (1454-93). At 18 he wrote a tract entitled On celibacy, in which he argued that the celibate life is far preferable to a married existence. This was a remarkable position for a Venetian of his standing to take, as he was expected to follow the traditional path of state service and marriage so as to produce the next generation of the Venetian ruling elite. This talk explores the implications of Barbaro’s views on celibacy and marriage in the context both of classical reception and of his own career path in later life down to his premature death in 1493.

Should you inform an employer that you have a disability? The short answer is that it is up to you and if you decide to disclose, there is no definitive right time, place, or person to disclose to.

Join the Queen's Human Rights and Equity Office, and the Discover Ability Network for a discussion on disability disclosure.

R4R@Q Webinar Series - Embedding EDI in Knowledge Mobilization, Translation, and Data Management

R4R@Q Webinar Series - Embedding EDI in Knowledge Mobilization, Translation, and Data Management

When:
Wednesday, June 8, 2022
10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
Where:
Zoom webinar
Find on Campus Map
Description:

The Vice-Principal Research Portfolio (VPR) proudly presents the webinar “Embedding EDI in Knowledge Mobilization, Translation, and Data Management”.

Knowledge mobilization, translation, and data management practices that are founded on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles are crucial to consider at the earliest stages of research design, and throughout the implementation of a research project. These practices can also be considered when strategizing for research impact and preparing data management plans.

This is the third in a series of three webinars to support researchers at every stage of their careers to embed EDI in their research practices. This series is closely tied to the online EDI in Research training modules that were developed for the Queen’s research community by the Human Rights and Equity Office and Vice-Principal Research Portfolio. These asynchronous modules can be accessed from the VPR Portfolio website: Integrating EDII in Research.

R4R@Q Webinar Series - Research Data Management @ Queen’s

R4R@Q Webinar Series - Research Data Management @ Queen’s

When:
Wednesday, March 2, 2022
2:00 PM – 3:00 PM
Where:
Zoom webinar
Find on Campus Map
Description:

The Vice-Principal Research portfolio in collaboration with Open Scholarship Services proudly presents, Research Data Management @ Queen’s.

While research data management (RDM) has always been a vital component of the research lifecycle, it has become even more important since the release of the Tri-Agency’s policy on Research Data Management in early 2021.

The agencies “believe that research data collected through the use of public funds should be responsibly and securely managed and be, where ethical, legal and commercial obligations allow, available for reuse by others.” In order for researchers to accomplish these important objectives, the Tri-Agency has implemented three specific requirements:

  1. By March 2023, the creation of an institutional RDM strategy by each post-secondary institution and research hospital eligible to administer Tri-Agency funds.
  2. Starting in spring 2022, the inclusion of data management plans (DMPs) in applications for certain Tri-Agency grants.
  3. Beginning after March 2023, the deposit of research data, metadata, and code into a digital repository at the time of research publication (where allowed, and in accordance with the FAIR principles and the standards of the discipline).
