Work Experience and Career Development

Work Study Program

The Work Study Program is funded by Queen's University and the Government of Ontario. Its aim is to provide an opportunity for students in financial need to receive priority for certain part-time jobs, generally on-campus during academic terms. There is no deadline; however, job postings are most common in August/September and December/January. Students are encouraged to apply early. Faculty often find Work Study students useful in completing short-term projects.

Summer Work Experience Program (SWEP)

SWEP provides undergraduate students with an engaging, challenging and rewarding summer work experience. Funded through the undergraduate portion of the Student Assistance Levy, the program encourages creation of on-campus summer jobs that provide valuable experiences for Queen's undergraduate students. All campus faculties, schools, departments, faculty members, services and student organizations are eligible to submit SWEP Job Proposals by mid-November. SWEP positions are intended to enable students to attain a better understanding of the technical and/or professional skills involved in their discipline.

Queen's Undergraduate Internship Program (QUIP)

The Queen's Internship Program offers students the opportunity to learn about current advances, practices and technologies through professionally supervised 12- to 16-month work terms in business or industry. The program is open to students enrolled in Engineering, Arts & Science or Commerce after their 2nd or 3rd years.

Student-Alumni Mentoring

The Office of Advancement and the Queen's University Alumni Association offer a variety of student-alumni mentoring opportunities. Career conferences feature alumni speakers who return to campus to offer advice and describe their own career paths. The annual Media Career Day offers students an opportunity to travel to Queen's Park and be members of the press gallery for the day. The Backpack to Briefcase program helps students develop and hone professional skills such as resume writing, interview skills, networking and social etiquette. Finally, NetworQ is an online career networking community where students and alumni can connect, network and share career experiences and opportunities.
