Crossing the Border

When you are entering Canada, have these documents ready:

• Your completed application for a work permit or, if you did this at a Visa Post, the letter they issued and any documentation required in the CIC documentation check list or by the Visa Post

• HRSDC confirmation letter ("LMO"), not applicable for CRC, CERC, and Post-Doctoral Fellowship appointments

• Your offer of employment from Queen's

• Passport and visa, if issued. NOTE: visas will only be issued to the expiry date of the passport. Generally, a work permit can be expected to be issued for a four year period for most faculty, or, in case of a time limited appointment, to the end date of the appointment.

• Evidence of education and professional credentials as noted on the LMO letter Annex page - originals are required.

• Appropriate travel documentation for all accompanying family members, including marriage certificate/birth certificates for children

Once the immigration officer has determined that the documentation is in order, you will be issued the work permit document.

Important: Be sure to ask the immigration official to add accompanying dependents to the work permit or documentation of the person who has legal guardianship. If they are not listed, you may encounter difficulties with school registration and health insurance.

The Canadian Border Services Agency provides information and guidelines regarding moving goods into the country.

Immigration officials can serve you in both English and French.
